Cross Process app

I was going to jump right into this post and pretend I hadn't completely disappeared for an entire month. But I suppose an explanation is in order--I've just felt so so busy ever since I started my new job! I know, I know. First, I was a bad blogger because I was looking for a job. Now, I'm a bad blogger because I found one!

Ah well . . . this isn't just another bad blogger post. I promised I'd share some pics using the Cross Process app (2 months ago, if you can remember that far back!), so you see, I keep my promises.

I was pretty obsessed with the ShakeIt app for a while. Then Ray got me really into the Cross Process app. Below are examples of the two apps using a pic Ray shot of me on our last trip to NY.

Ebelskiver Pancakes

I love window shopping for food! Over the weekend, Ray and I stopped by Williams-Sonoma so I could drool. As a result, I now have a burning desire to try my hand at ebelskiver pancakes. These Danish treats are traditionally filled with an apple mixture, but considering Ray's obsession with Nutella, I think my first batch should be a vanilla pancake with a chocolate hazelnut filling. Ebelskiver pancakes can even be filled with savory ingredients like fig and proscuitto. Mmm!

Ray and I are driving down to Maryland today to visit my family. Whenever we take this drive, we always stop in Manhattan for a little rest stop because it's a perfect half-way mark. Cutting down the clutter . . .

I love Lonny Magazine. Besides the completely inspiring content, I also love Lonny's online format. I know there are a lot of proponents of old school, tangible publications, but I really prefer my magazines online.

Don't get me wrong--I have a ton of books (ask Ray, he has to carry them when we move), and I don't think I could ever stop collecting them. On the other hand, my magazine collection really needs to be purged. I'm in the process of culling through them for images and creating a filing system (probably a 3-ring binder with clear sleeves like the image below).

That's what's so brilliant about online magazines--Lonny is on its third issue and has an archive neatly laid out for me. Plus, it's quite easy to print out any inspiring images, articles, etc.

Paper Crafting

Over the holidays, my lovely and talented nieces agreed to teach me how to crochet and knit, so off we went to Michaels. While there, I noticed a huge clearance sale on scrapbooking supplies. Remember all of the photo albums I never got around to making? I figured everything was such a great price, I might as well pick up an album, some adhesive, and maybe a couple pads of printed cardstock to add a decorative element.

Oh my goodness. I had no idea how much fun I would have. I started off consulting good old Martha for tips, but I soon discovered a vast wealth of inspiration posted by other paper crafters. I mean, I've always had an odd penchant for office supples and stationary (I never even write letters!), but I had no idea I could be so inspired by paper crafting.

Anyway, here are the first two cards I made. The first is a Christmas card for my Grandmother. I realize it's a bit too . . . visually stimulating, but it was difficult not to get carried away :) The second is a birthday card and a matching gift bag for my friend, AB. I was so proud of myself. Trying to be Responsible

What else have I been doing the past month? Well, I've been trying to cook more, finish photo albums left on my To-Do list from years ago, get super organized, etc. Basically, I've been trying to keep my New Year's resolutions. Some, I've been kind of successful with--others (like working out), not so much.

But let's not dwell on the failures. I finally got around to organizing all of my clothes. First, I separated everything into different categories: 1) keep, 2) donate, and 3) sell to a consignment shop. Well, actually there was a fourth category. There were just some pieces that I could not let go off. They were pieces that I really loved, but just did not fit me right. The plan is to fill the 3 Floors Up shop with these items. Anyway, that's a whole other huge project . . .

So, after I went through all of my clothes, I was able to free up enough space to actually get things organized. Ray and I have very limited storage space, so this was major. Also, Apartment Therapy has some very basic, but very useful tips that I utilized. For instance, now everything is color-coded and the hangers match.

I took this picture last month. I would have to say my biggest accomplishment is that my clothes still look like that!!

Goodbye

Last month, I had to close down the little shop that I spent the last 5 years in. I started off as a part-timer, just working on the weekends, and I end up managing the place. Although I knew it was the right time for me to move on, the experience was very bittersweet.

Well, that's what I've been doing this past month. For a while, I was busy breaking down the shop. Then, when that was all taken care of, I buckled down and finally made job hunting my full-time job. I ended up feeling kind of guilty contemplating the thought of blogging when I could be job searching instead. But really, I'm the type of person that needs work/life balance in order to stay sharp and prevent premature burnout. So, I'm glad to be back in the world of blogging--I've certainly missed 3 Floors Up.

Below is a picture of the shop empty and ready for demolition. More importantly, it's a picture of the best team I've ever worked with. I wish everyone the best of luck. . . I <3 you guys.

Happy 2010!

I know this post is long overdue . . .

The holidays were particularly busy for me because my family came to visit. Ray and I hosted Christmas morning and my niece's birthday. It was difficult not to get stressed out (being a hostess is hard!), but I had so much fun planning my niece's 13th birthday. I'll share some pics soon, but for now, here are some images of a great before/after I found on Apartment Therapy. This space would be way too girly for Ray to handle, but I'm totally inspired by it :) Hopefully, I'll have some of my own inspiring before/after posts in 2010 . . .

Winter's finally here. It snowed for the first time last night and it's going to be freezing all week. It's about time--all the 70 degree days this December were kind of freaking me out.

Anyway, despite the season, I still crave ice cream and nothing sounds so good to me right now as the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck. If there's anyone whose food recommendation I trust, it's George. Knowing about my affinity for salty chocolate, he clued me in on the BGICT, namely because of a vanilla soft serve creation topped with caramel, chocolate, and of course, salt. Sigh. Just another reason I kind of wish I lived in NYC. Kind of.

Shopping in My Closet

When I get the urge to shop, I have to remember some good advice that I heard somewhere--I should try shopping in my own closet. Basically, every girl should know exactly what she owns so that she can make smart buying decisions and have a well rounded wardrobe. I, for one, am not one of these organized girls. I'm always finding something that I totally forgot I even own.

Take, for example, this scarf. I found it the other day and I was so psyched! It felt like I had just gone shopping--but way better. I'm always thinking I need more accessories, especially scarves. In reality, I know I need absolutely nothing, but it's fun to update my wardrobe every season. I just have to take a really thorough inventory of what I own in order to be a smarter shopper.

Jenna Lyons

Yes, Mickey Drexler took over J.Crew in 2003 (and started making vast improvements), but it wasn't until Jenna Lyons (Creative Director since 2007) came on board that the seed of my obsession was planted.

Honestly, I don't even buy much from J.Crew, but I eagerly flip through their catalogs and devour all of the styling. I've gotten so much inspiration from them and I've been especially lusting over all the blingy costume jewelry <3

This past summer, a blogger for Fashionista.com spent the day with Lyons and her interview is pretty interesting. Aside from styling tips, Lyons also answered a lot of logistical questions regarding her role as Creative Director. I also enjoyed the glimpses of inspiration boards that were in the background of some of the pics. Definitely check out Part I and Part II of this interview.

Staycation!

It's true, I'm not going anywhere for my vacation, but I have to say, I'm just so excited to have the time off! On my first official staycation day, Ray and I grabbed some lunch at Redbones. Their lunch specials include the "Combo" which is, basically, a "heap" of meat. That was a no-brainer.

Next, I had to decide on my drink. Yes, I know it was only 2 in the afternoon, but it's the first official day of my staycation! I decided to order the Dogfish Sah'tea. Although the waitress warned me that it was "big," I was unprepared for the wine bottle that it came in. Oh well, Asian alcohol tolerance be damned, I decided to man up and try to finish it. First of all, this beer is delicious, really delicious. Second of all, I didn't actually finish the bottle. And third of all, I may be kind of tipsy right now.

Well, it's more of a love/hate thing. For the past few years, I've been increasingly obsessed with J. Crew (and Madewell). I blame Drexler for this. Well, I guess in his defense, as prices have steadily risen at Drexler's retail establishments, so has their creative styling and sheer awesomeness.

Uh-Oh!

The LX3 has arrived! I decided to go with the silver. I left her at home so that Ray could charge the battery and take some test pics. The results are looking good!

Recovering . . .

You'd think that I would be recovering from the gluttony, also known as Thanksgiving, but I'm actually recovering from Black Friday Shopping. I'm so exhausted--I don't even want to think about the goodies that I scored for cheap.

Instead, I'd like to reminisce about the lovely, stress-free day I had yesterday, just stuffing my face and lounging around the house.

I also want to say thank you. Thank you for my loved ones, and the roof over my head, and the delicious bounty that covered my table . . . So I guess I should also thank Boston Market, Petsi Pies, Haagen Dazs, and Magic Hat Brewery, without whom the aforementioned bounty would not have been possible. (Ray and I don't cook.)

My Glasses

I love my current pair of glasses more than any other pair I've ever owned. I got them from SEE Optical in Harvard Square. I didn't realize at the time that they look very similar to the Tycoon frames by Oliver Peoples. The Tycoon frames are part of the Iconic Styles collection offered every season. This is in contrast to SEE, who only produces a limited run of all their styles. So, once they sell out, that's it.

As someone that wears glasses everyday, it's really important to me that I find a pair of frames that I absolutely love. So, when I finally stumble upon a pair that I'm actually excited to put on day after day, I always worry that in a couple of years when they need to be replaced, I'll never be able to find them again. It's a relief to know that if I ever need a replacement, I can always get the Tycoon. Phew.

Bloch Ballet Flats

LX3K vs. LX3S

I am so torn. I know I definitely want to get the LX3, but what color?? (And, yes, this is important) Then there is the decision about the case. I know I want the DMW-CLX3, but again, what color??

I thought I had settled this debate because of the varying price points between the LX3K and LX3S -- Because the black seemed to be about $40 more expensive than the silver, I was going to go with the latter. However, now they're both the same price!

Should I go with a black LX3 and a brown case? A silver LX3 and a black case? Or a black LX3 and a black case?

Right now, I think I've ruled out the brown case . . . Omg, I have got to do some serious thinking.

The Wives of Henry VIII by Antonia Fraser

"For anyone who wants a one volume account of the astonishing reign of this king, The Wives of Henry the VIII presents a useful, clear history." --Wall Street Journal

It's not often that historians define a powerful man by the women in his life. In fact, the opposite is true, but Fraser avoids this perspective. Her feminist orientation definitely appeals to me and her writing is extremely readable. I really appreciate how each woman is depicted with careful consideration and how Fraser consciously attempts to move away from the stereotypical generalizations of "the Betrayed Wife, the Temptress, the Good Woman, the Ugly Sister, the Bad Girl, and the Mother Figure." Oh yeah, and Tudor history is seriously scandalous. I mean really--the man had six wives.

In anticipation of the Steven Alan sale today on Gilt Groupe, I was looking at the Fall Collection and getting super excited.

But when it came down to it, I couldn't bring myself to spend the money. The discounts just weren't deep enough :( Maybe if Gilt Groupe offered free shipping . . . Too Old for Hightops

Is there such a thing as dressing age appropriately? If there is, then what are the rules? Not too long ago, I decided that I'm too old for hightops. Every time I tried to rock a pair, I felt silly. But then I saw the adidas I'm wearing below.

This pair is part of the Sleek Series that was released this season. Basically, this is the more feminine version of the iconic Top Ten shoe. It is narrower than the classic basketball shoe and it has an almond shaped toe. Besides the streamlined shape, I also really like the colorway. I've been gravitating toward sneakers that are one solid color up top and then have a white sole.

Marais Two-toned Flats

Why is it so hard to find a pair of simple ballet flats that don't cost an arm and a leg? I loooove Repetto, but $235 for a single pair is not going to happen. A nice alternative is the Two Toned Flats by Marais. I love their simple, classic styling and I love this white and beige colorway! And at $65 they are totally reasonable.

When I first stumbled upon them, they were completely sold out, but I just noticed they're back in stock . . .

Sunday Morning Outfit

I like to play with proportions and pair really baggy items with fitted pieces, or cinch loose clothing with a belt at the waist. Last Sunday morning was a really lazy day though and I wanted to be totally comfortable. Everything I wore was loose fit, however, I did throw on a pair of heels to try and balance out all my baggy layers.

The Prisoner: Night One

The first two episodes of AMC's The Prisoner were awesome. I didn't realize the show is a mini-series that's going to air another two episodes a night till Tuesday. Anyway, there were alot of changes from the old show, but I like the direction AMC decided to go in. Plus, they kept some really iconic similarities like Rover and that weirdo guy that sells Six a map in the first episode.

Haha, and First Blood came on afterward. You know, the first Rambo. So, I guess Ray and I are watching that now?

iPhone Pics

Ray took this picture with his iPhone and then used the free Photoshop App to create the blurred effect around the edges. He was able to edit the photo on the quick walk to Tory Row for breakfast. iPhones are so handy!! The Apps are amazing and it's nice to have a such a decent camera on my phone when I want to take food pics without drawing attention to myself.

This is the French toast I had this morning. Tory Row makes a pretty good breakfast. The selection is limited, but there are a couple of good options (the French toast!) and there never seems to be a wait on the weekends.

My Mad Men Replacement

Oooh, I'm so excited. Tomorrow night is the season premiere of The Prisoner at 10pm. This is normally my Mad Men slot, but last week was the season finale. I thought I would be totally bummed, but after watching the trailer for The Prisoner, I'm pumped!

The original television show from the 60's dealt with issues that Americans were preoccupied with at the time because of the Cold War. AMC's version of The Prisoner focuses on issues, like surveillance and personal freedom, that examine more recent events. I think it's really great that this new show isn't just a remake and I'm really excited to see how it builds on concepts from the old show.

Anyway, below is the trailer from AMC that got me psyched. Also, this is a viral site I found that is pretty creepy and kind of awesome. Unless tomorrow's episode really sucks, I think I'm going to get really nerdy about this show.

My Comfy Clothing Essentials

My go-to comfy clothing is pretty consistent. One of my all-time favorite shirts is a great men's flannel that I got from Uniqlo's F/W 2008 collection. Already super soft when new, it seems to get even more comfy with age. Also among my favorites are my pair of paper-thin 100% cotton leggings. Yes, I consider Sassybax leggings my secret weapon, but sometimes cozy wins out over skinny. And then, of course, there are my Pima cotton shirts . . .

When I throw all three of these items on, then you know I must be feeling a particular need to be comfy. These times are usually when I'm running late or I feel like I need a day off. So really, I guess I tend to wear this outfit a lot.

My To Do List

I'm interestested in design in general, but I don't know much about architecture. However, learning about Frank Lloyd Wright, his life and his aesthetic philosophies, may have been the catalyst for my interest in design. Certainly understanding the contexts that give rise to specific movements always deepens my interest. I had the amazing opportunity to visit one of Wright's most iconic structures, Fallingwater, and it was the best tour I have ever taken.

The trip out to Fallingwater was quite a trek for me, so I don't know if I'll ever visit it again, but the Gropius House is just around the corner in Lexington! And for those that don't trust themselves to operate large machinery, it is accessible via the commuter rail. The Gropius House is definitely on my To Do List.
